To promote standardization for the improvement of the quality of goods, services and sound management practices in industries and public institutions in Ghana.
To become a model of excellence in Standardization in Africa.
A two-day international General Assembly Meeting of North, East and West Africa Metrology (NEWMET) organized under the auspices of the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) has ended in Accra.
The purpose of the meeting was to promote accuracy in measurement or metrology in member countries and in Africa as a whole to facilitate intra-African and international trade with the view to overcoming technical barriers to trade.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of the Ghana Standards Board, Dr. George Ben Crentsil, explained that accurate measurement forms the backbone of technical regulations, written standards and legal metrology. This, he said, means that “the modern world depends on consistent, accurate measurement in everything we do.”
He also stated that “accurate and widely accepted measurements are important in ensuring that market transactions can take place and that consumers can feel confident that the goods they buy are of the quantity and quality they require.”
The Accra meeting was attended by participants from various Metrology institutions in Africa, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya and Nigeria.
By stimulating collaboration in Africa in this way, NEWMET will help in promoting Africa’s interest and effective participation in international standard-setting bodies.
